Cambridge South Station: Delivering Battery Storage for a Major Network Rail Infrastructure Project
Immersa partnered with Murphy Group, a leading infrastructure developer, to deliver a battery energy storage system as part of the Cambridge South Station development, a major infrastructure project led by Network Rail. Unlike typical commercial installations, this project required working within a highly regulated environment, integrating battery storage into a wider transport infrastructure scheme alongside established contractors and engineering teams. Immersa was responsible for the full delivery of the BESS solution, from design through to installation and integration.

Project Objective:
Increase on-site energy self-sufficiency and support renewable infrastructure
Core Benefit:
Fully integrated BESS delivered within a complex infrastructure environment
Challenge
Delivering battery storage within a large scale rail infrastructure project introduces additional complexity compared to standard commercial energy systems. The project required integration within a multi-stakeholder infrastructure environment, compliance with strict Network Rail standards and requirements, coordination with an EPC contractor operating at national infrastructure scale, seamless operation alongside on-site solar PV generation, and a reliable, fully supported battery solution suitable for long-term infrastructure use. This meant Immersa needed to take full ownership of the BESS scope, ensuring a smooth and compliant delivery.
Approach
- Full BESS system design and integration planning
- Supplying two AlphaESS G2-H50 systems
- Managing installation within a live infrastructure environment
- Coordinating closely with Murphy and wider project stakeholders
- Providing technical support and ensuring system compliance
Products & Services
Products
- 2 x AlphaESS G2-H50 battery systems (209.66kWh total)
- Note: This project utilised the previous G2 range. For 2026 projects, Immersa now supplies the new AlphaESS G3-H50 (120.5kWh), offering enhanced performance and flexibility.
Services
- Full BESS system design and engineering
- Installation and integration within infrastructure project
- Technical coordination with EPC contractor
- Ongoing support and system commissioning
Solution
The installed battery system operates alongside on site solar PV, enabling energy to be stored and used when required. The system is AC coupled, ensuring compatibility with the existing infrastructure and providing flexibility in how energy is managed across the site. This approach supports the station's broader sustainability objectives while ensuring reliable performance within a critical infrastructure setting.
Results & Impact
- Successful BESS delivery within a major Network Rail project
- Seamless collaboration with a Tier 1 EPC contractor
- Full design, supply and installation managed by Immersa
- A scalable energy solution supporting renewable integration
- Strong proof point of Immersa's capability in infrastructure projects
Value Delivered
- This project demonstrates Immersa's ability to deliver battery energy storage systems within complex, large scale infrastructure environments. By working alongside Murphy Group and supporting Network Rail's development, we have shown that our capabilities extend beyond traditional commercial installations.
- For EPC contractors and infrastructure partners, this provides a clear proof point that Immersa can take full responsibility for BESS design, integration and delivery — reducing risk and ensuring successful project outcomes in even the most demanding environments.
